Columbus Zoo Improves Communications With NEC Unified Solutions IP Telephony System
    - Columbus Zoo Achieves Significant Cost Savings with Next-Generation IP Communications Network -
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- VoiceCon 2005 Conference & Expo, Booth #315 -- NEC Unified Solutions, Inc. (NEC) a leader in integrated communications solutions, today announced that the Columbus Zoo has deployed a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network with NEC's NEAX 2000 Internet Protocol Server (IPS). With the new network, the Columbus Zoo has realized a thirty percent savings in infrastructure costs by deploying IP Telephony over its existing fiber data infrastructure.

Parallel Technologies, based in Dublin, Ohio, completed the network implementation, which included a benchmark network assessment test, prior to deployment, to ensure that the existing data network could support the added voice traffic.

After completing the network assessment, Parallel completed a seamless implementation of the NEAX 2000 IPS and installed 280 desktop IP phones throughout the 50 buildings located on the 90 acres of the Zoo's main campus, in Powell, Ohio.

Designed primarily for converged IP networks, the NEAX 2000 IPS is a flexible platform for medium to large enterprises that can accommodate a mix of traditional and IP telephony, depending on the end user's business needs.

"By deploying a converged communications network, we have realized significant cost savings and increased productivity for our team members," said Jack Hanna, director emeritus, Columbus Zoo. "The Return on Investment (ROI) and improved efficiencies, realized by deploying IP Telephony, allows our staff to focus on our core initiatives of wildlife preservation, public education and support of conservation efforts in the wild."

"The Columbus Zoo's new network allows the organization to further improve communication and the relationship with its visitor and member base, while delivering the full benefits of a robust and reliable IP communications platform to its staff," said David King, vice president, NEC Unified Solutions.

The Columbus Zoo has also signed a two-year maintenance agreement with Parallel Technologies and is expanding its converged network to its adjacent Safari Golf course.

"Parallel Technologies looks forward to continuing its relationship with the Columbus Zoo," said Joe Redman, president, Parallel Technologies. "The new NEC IP solution will simplify administration and maintenance requirements and allow the Zoo to grow and expand its communications at a rate that best meets its needs."
