3 Tips for Choosing a Structured Cabling Vendor

July 22, 2021

Expanding or moving to a new facility requires careful planning about how to house, transfer, or increase network connections. Structured cabling is the pillar of any large or multifaceted network installation. Below are three of our top tips for choosing a structured cabling provider.

1. Knowledge of Codes and Standards

Confirm that the vendor is well-versed in local building codes and standards for structured cabling infrastructure. Standards exist for different types of buildings and installation for structured cabling systems. Your vendor should be able to demonstrate both how they comply and stay up to date with these standards.

2. License, Experience and Warranties

As with any vendor, ensure proof of insurance and state and/or local licensure. A list of references, as well as information about how long the contractor has been in business and how for how long they have been doing this kind of structured cabling work will also demonstrate the vendor’s experience and track record of success. Warrantees ensure that the work will meet your needs and that the vendor will address problems for a quantified amount of time after the installation.

3. Comprehensive Quote and Timeline

Reputable vendors should provide a detailed quote that specifies the estimated time the project will take from planning through implementation. Quotes should clearly categorize costs for planning, equipment, supplies, and contingencies for unforeseen interruptions or technical hitches. Consider having a “request for proposal” procedure in place that clearly states your expectations and due dates.

Lastly, when choosing a structured cabling vendor, it’s best to clearly state your needs and expectations, and allow an ample amount of time to find one with the right one to complete your job.
